Vehicle Readiness Checklist

Project Summary

As part of a community education initiative focused on emergency readiness, especially during hurricane season, I created a printable job aid to help individuals and families prepare in advance. Designed in Adobe InDesign, this resource combines clear checklists with brief educational prompts, helping users build both confidence and essential skills for real-world preparedness.

Learning Solutions

To support the goals of this community campaign, I developed a job aid document that organizes key readiness information into four focused checklists: emergency kit supplies, first aid essentials, preparedness tips, and emergency information sources. While it serves as a practical tool for ensuring families are ready, it also encourages deeper learning by highlighting skills to develop (such as how to change a tire or use a radio for updates). The document was created in Adobe InDesign for professional layout and print distribution, and will be paired with targeted micro-lessons in upcoming community events. I conducted research, incorporated AI as a drafting tool, and collaborated with a subject matter expert to review the content for accuracy and relevance.

This job or instruction aid was developed in InDesign with minimal branding so that it could be easily shared with other organizations in the community.

A large percentage of the target group are elderly, so accessibility was a priority. Clear, easy-to-read typefaces in a generous font size were used. This design choice also benefits those who are trying to use the document during a storm or in other stressful situations where focus is difficult.

Elevate Learning

This resource was designed not only to inform, but to inspire action. By organizing information into manageable, focused sections and pairing it with tips that encourage self-assessment and further learning, the job aid helps individuals move from awareness to practical preparation. It supports long-term learning goals by prompting users to seek out skills they may be missing and connect with additional learning opportunities.

Ensure Access

The job aid was created with clarity and accessibility in mind. It features clean, easy-to-read typography, straightforward language, and a visual layout that allows quick reference during high-stress situations. Because it was designed for print and digital use, it can be easily shared with community members who may have limited online access or rely on physical materials during a power outage or evacuation.

Support Mastery

To promote active engagement, the job aid goes beyond merely listing supplies. Each checklist is paired with brief guidance or reminders that encourage users to reflect on their readiness and identify areas for improvement. Community educators will use the document as a launching point for micro-lessons, allowing learners to build real-world skills in a practical, hands-on context.

Clarify Content

I worked with a subject matter expert to review and refine the content, ensuring that the information is accurate, relevant, and easy to follow. I used Adobe InDesign to structure and style the job aid for clarity, grouping items logically and presenting tips in a way that avoids cognitive overload. The final design balances utility with visual clarity—making it both an effective learning tool and a helpful reference in real-life situations.
